The purpose of this project was to empower aspiring designers to become self-taught and to enhance the accessibility of the design profession. I strongly believe that numerous talented individuals with a creative flair are waiting to flourish in the field of design. It is my ambition to play a pivotal role in aiding these individuals in uncovering the wonders of design and honing their skills.
When I got my first design mentee, I realized I had to start teaching him Figma from scratch. I built small exercises for us to work through together and realized that other designers could benefit from this type of walkthrough. I polished up the exercises and added context where needed to make sure someone could walk through it themselves.
The workbook walks you through the basic FIgma functions, creating elements like lines, elipses, and rectangels and teaches you how to use frames, groups, and grids. Then, it covers how to use components and introduces wireframing. In chapter 4, you practice moving from low to to high fidelity through a series of exercises. And finally, in the last chapter, you prototype the onboarding flow for your client's app.
I published the guide to the Figma community and have since used it with four of my design mentees and has been used by 24 people on through the Figma Community. The designer in me has used this opportunity for informal usability testing and I have a list of changes that I would love to make to the guide to make it a bit smoother to use for beginners.
